Tryouts are tough...how do you show in a few hours what your capable of and what your potential will be...

This is what makes tryouts so nerve-wracking even for the most seasoned player at all levels. The great news is that this is a common feeling for most players (and parents), so you are not alone.

Here are some tips to stand out during tryouts that seem to be universal no matter what sport you are playing.

PLAYERS

  • Hustle during every drill, every water break, every shagging break, and every team huddle.
  • Attitude, positive or negative, will be noticed.
  • Respect authority and be coachable: "I've always done it this way" is not being coachable.
  • Give 100% effort during every drill; the outcome can't be guaranteed, but your effort can.

PARENTS:

  • Allow your child to do their thing; don't coach or give them feedback from the sidelines. This only makes it look like they are not paying attention during tryouts.
  • Don't reach out to coaches in advance to "talk-up" your child. Let their actions do the talking with no additional pressure.
  • Help manage their expectations by being honest when they ask you. "Your serving wasn't as solid as some other players, but you hustled every drill!"
